Highway 16 and other highways
This state highway runs northwest to southeast through
the approximate center of the
Gig Harbor Peninsula from the Kitsap County line to
the Tacoma Narrows Bridge. A series of east-west
oriented county and city arterial roadways connect the
local road network to the highway. Those connecting
arterials include 14th Avenue/Stone Drive
NW, Olympic Drive NW, Wollochet Drive NW, Burnham
Drive NW/Sehmel Drive NW, and State Route 302 (Purdy
Drive)
Transit bus service is provided by Pierce Transit and
is oriented primarily to weekday commuters traveling
to and from work or school in
Tacoma and Seattle. Commuter service picks up and
drops off passengers at two park and ride facilities
adjacent to State Route 16. (www.ptbus.pierce.wa.us)
A private/state
partnership is constructing a second bridge adjacent
to the current suspension bridge. It will be
completed in Spring 2007. At that time eastbound
traffic to Tacoma will travel over the new bridge
and westbound to Gig Harbor will travel over the
existing bridge. The existing bridge is being
converted to three lanes. The highway system leading
up to the bridges will be improved as well,
including HOV lanes. (www.tacomanarrowsbridge.com),

An airport, operated
by Tacoma, is located in Gig Harbor which provides
private plane service and can service private jets.
Commuter service has operated from this airport in
the past and no doubt will in the future. (www.pcedc.com)
